SummerStage, New York City’s largest free performing arts festival, celebrates latin artists and continues its 40 years of hip-hop tribute for the 2014 season.
Latin highlights include 12th Brazilian Film Festival of NY (June 12), Latin Alternative Music Conference (July 9 & 12), Ballet Hispanico with A Palo Seco (July 16), Brasil Summerfest featuring Lenine & Martin Fondse Orchestra: The Bridge, Maíra Freitas, DJ Tutu Moraes (July 19), Catalan Sounds On Tour: Mishima, Txarango, DJ sets by Headbirds (July 20), John Leguizamo’s Ghetto Klown (July 28), and The Nuyorican Poets Cafe’s 40th Anniversary Celebration, Screening: Our Latin Thing (August 17).
New York’s Hip-Hop heads will be treated with performances by Ty Dolla $ign (June 3), Pro Era (June 5), Duck Down BBQ with Boot Camp Clik & Friends (June 10), Sisqo (June 11), Salute to Hip Hop with DJ Bent Roc, Chubb Rock, Dana Dane, and Special Ed (June 18), Mobb Deep (July 17), Rock Steady Crew 37th Anniversary Concert (July 27), and gender bending hip-hop performer Mykki Blanco (August 7).
Whistle!: A Tribute to Frankie Knuckles with a Screening of “Hands to the Sky” remembering the remarkable house music innovator is on June 22 in Herbert Von King Park.
Jazz fans will be treated with performances by the Blue Note Jazz Festival featuring Buika with Marques Toliver (June 22) and Gregory Porter & Revive Big Band led by Igmar Thomas (August 3). And of course the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival returns on August 23 with The Wallace Roney Orchestra, Lionel Loueke, Melissa Aldana, Kris Bowers with special guest Chris Turner, then the festival continues on August 24 with Kenny Barron, Cindy Blackman Santana, Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith, Brianna Thomas.
