Galvanized by song and the voices of Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Gilberto Gil, Roy Brown, and many others, the Civil Rights Movement fought to address the inequities communities of African descent faced. In the 21st century, there is still a vital need to revitalize the spirit of social justice through songs of freedom. Tonight, the healing and empowering nature of music shines on in the Jamaican-accented soul of Ky-Mani Marley and the bright fusion of rock, funk, soul, and reggae from Bronx-based band Finotee.
