Open Sound System: M.A.K.U Soundsystem Immigrant Beat with special guests

With most of its members hailing from Colombia, M.A.K.U Soundsystem’s distinctive sound—self-termed as immigrant beat—is enriched with hints of Colombian folklore, psychedelic rock, and Caribbean grooves.

Onstage M.A.K.U juxtaposes traditional Colombian percussion, drum-set, synthesizers, electric bass, guitar, and sizzling horns, creating an explosive performance filled with unshakable grooves. Lyrically, M.A.K.U talks about the realities of everyday people, encompassing love, hardships, culture, and the immigrant experience, but with a positive, spiritual, and sometimes humorous spin. M.A.K.U is as much about the music as it is about a way of life.

In this performance commissioned by Lincoln Center, M.A.K.U Soundsystem expresses the immigrant experience through music with a special lineup of musicians who have inspired them. The evening will feature original songs with guest artists, including People’s Champs, Bulla en el Barrio, Bajah and the Dry Eye Crew, Innov Gnawa, and DJ Sir-Ramases Kofi.
