Nasimiyu came up in a half-Kenyan, half-Scandinavian household in Minneapolis, then rounded out her sound studying under street performers, voodoo practitioners, and marching band musicians for 4 years in New Orleans. She now moves and shakes in eclectic artist circles in Brooklyn.

Her EP “dirt” features guest players Kalmia Traver of Rubblebucket, Mike Bass of Trombone Shorty, and the New Orleans brass band, Naughty Professor. Nasimiyu received glowing reviews from Vogue, Spin, Nylon, Impose, Okay Africa, AfroPunk, Magnent, Utne and Interview Magazines for the uniquely spirited sounds on “dirt.”

Although she played most of the instruments on the new album herself, Nasimiyu fronts and plays keys/percussion with a 4-piece live backing band of NYC musicians she describes as her “top picks.” With Attis Clopton on drums, Mark Nagy on sousaphone, Eden Baraket on bari sax, and Andrew McGovern on trumpet, the band has a pronounced dynamism that has garnered a lively new following.

B-Side, Brooklyn Independent Media’s live in-studio music series, features performances from emerging and established musicians on Thursday evenings. These performances are open to the public, however our studio space is limited.

Doors open at 7pm. Guests who would like to be part of the in-studio audience are encouraged to arrive early. Show starts around 7:30pm. Others are encouraged to watch a live simulcast from the Hungry Ghost Cafe next to the studio.
