Featuring 6pm DJ workshop with Scratch Academy.
Born and raised in East Harlem, Lisette Melendez was musically inspired at an early age, imitating her church-singing mother, and later, Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler. She would then fall in love with freestyle, spurred on by her idol, Lisa Lisa. Viewing her as another strong Puerto Rican woman, she promptly followed in her free & stylish footsteps. Getting her foot in the door in 1988 as a backup singer, Lisette would eventually release her first single “Together Forever,” with an album of the same name that followed in 1991. The title track climbed to #35 on the Billboard Hot 100, a represented a reenergizing of the freestyle movement. Her follow-up, 1994’s True To Life contained the Billboard Hot 100 dance gems “Goody Goody” (#53), “A Day In My Life (Without You)” (#49), and “Will You Ever Save Me” which hit the Rhythmic Top 40 at #38. In 1997 she put out Imagination, with lead single “Time Passes By.” Lisette then got in touch with her familial roots, and in 1998, released, Un Poco De Mi, a salsa record sung in Spanish. The single “Algo de Mi” charted on numerous Latin lists. In 2000 she released aGreatest Hits record, and has reconnected with many prominent freestyle artists, touring and performing her signature free-style.
