This year’s gathering honors Amiri Baraka—poet, musician, activist philosopher, provocative theorist—with words and sounds that reflect the late writer’s pan-diasporic sensibilties and progressive challenges to the status quo. In this day-long celebration, Affrilachian masters, youth poet laureates, hip-hop freestylers, and other writers devoted to story and verse join explosive flamenco, salsa con consciencia, experimental Mexican vocal music, folk-jazz reinventions of Pakistani qawwali, Afro-Bahia music and dance, and inspired Native American song.
