When the realms of music and painting come together, the result is the world of Photoplay. The duo create a sound alchemically grander than the sum of its parts. Both intimate and expansive, the arrangements are lushly textured and rhythmically infused with seductive melodies, simple hooks, and hints of the band’s orchestral ambitions. Each song comes across as a hidden gem—something discovered in stacks of dusty vinyl, friendly ghosts speaking of the past in future perfect. Synesthetic and image-oriented lyrics make up songs about color, place, mystery, mythologies, longing and love. Rotating between pairings of electric guitar and keys (Jennifer Jane) and nylon guitar, drums and autoharp (H. Leon Harris, ex-Selmanaires), with warm, distinctive vocals floating overhead, Photoplay casts a spell of light and dark, sunbleached and starworn places, sounds and images.
