This year’s free opening concert features Brittany Howard, one of music’s most celebrated figures, who comes in support of her GRAMMY-nominated, critically-acclaimed debut solo album, Jaime.
As the frontwoman and guitarist for Alabama Shakes, Howard has become one of music’s most celebrated figures—the band has won four Grammys (out of its nine nominations), and she has performed everywhere from the Obama White House to the main stage at Lollapalooza, where she sang with Paul McCartney at his invitation. For her solo debut, Jaime, Howard boldly decided to explore new directions, with diverse instrumentation and arrangements and intimate, revelatory lyrics.
Recorded after a cross country drive that took her from Nashville to a small house in Topanga, CA, Howard titled Jaime after her sister, who taught her to play the piano and write poetry, and who died of cancer when they were still teenagers. Upon its release, Pitchfork awarded the album its Best New Music certification, calling it a “thrilling opus that pushes the boundaries of voice, sound, and soul to new extremes;” Rolling Stone and The Guardian each gave it 4/5 stars. The album opener, “History Repeats,” received two nominations at the 62nd Annual GRAMMY Awards, for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance.
The free concert featuring Brittany Howard will coincide with the Festival’s Opening Night REVEL fundraising event. For more information on the REVEL, click here.
