Known for her stunning voice and high-energy performances that feature drumming and dancing, Awa Sangho has been called the “golden voice of Mali” (Afropop). Born in West Africa, Sangho writes original songs with socially conscious lyrics in a variety of African languages, with themes ranging from her hopes for today’s youth to her respect for the musicians who came before her. Utilizing traditional instruments—such as thengoni, kora, and balafon—Sangho’s debut album, Ala Ta, is full of the rhythms and character of her homeland and was hailed as “an exceptional debut” (Afropop).
