With influences ranging from African folk melodies and desert blues to jazz, pop, reggae, funk, and soul, an evening with songwriter, guitarist, and singer Daby Touré is true global adventure. Born in Mauritania, raised in Senegal, and a longtime resident of Paris, he is a citizen of the world in perpetual reconfiguration. A musical and linguistic polyglot, Touré creates an elegant sonic mixture that merges the linguistic inflections of the six languages he speaks. His music is a puzzle whose pieces, once assembled, form a comprehensive map of the world. It builds bridges between cultures, crossing borders and giving life to a poetic language and a universal sound. His live performances are joy-filled affairs, fueled by his infectious love of music.
On his latest album, Amonafi, which will be released by Cumbancha on September 18, Touré’s singular vision reveals a complex yet approachable sound, one that defies expectations and stereotypes of what it means to be an African artist today. He has shared the stage and studio with Peter Gabriel, Souad Massi, Enzo Avitabile, Maxime Le Forestier, Skip McDonald, and The Touré-Raichel Collective, among others.
