The dynamic “atheist trombone shout choir,” led by multi-instrumentalist and composer Jacob Garchik (a frequent arranger for Kronos Quartet), performs The Heavens, Garchik’s critically acclaimed suite celebrating reason, the laws of science, and the glory of infinity.
Bang on a Can’s unclassifiable mobile ensemble Asphalt Orchestra, born at Lincoln Center Out of Doors, takes to the Damrosch stage to unleash the world premiere of its most ambitious project to date: original, commissioned arrangements of pioneering alt-rockers the Pixies’s breakthrough album, Surfer Rosa, for its 25th anniversary, with choreography by Jordana Che Toback.
Parade sets by Jacob Garchik’s The Heavens and Asphalt Orchestra start at 6:00 on Josie Robertson Plaza and Hearst Plaza.
Kronos Quartet debuts new works by electronic vanguardists and indie rock revolutionaries, including commissioned collaborations with DIY ukulele-powered orchestrator Jherek Bischoff (A Semiperfect Number) and electronic/acoustic experimentalist and self-described “instigator” Dan Deacon, whose Four Phases of Conflict will feature an interactive light show in which audience members can participate via a free download of Deacon’s mobile app. Also on the program are world premieres by pioneering electronic musician Amon Tobin and young Juilliard composer Yuri Boguinia, plus works by Clint Mansell and The National’s Bryce Dessner.

Jherek Bischoff’s A Semiperfect Number and Dan Deacon’s Four Phases of Conflict were commissioned for Kronos Quartet in honor of its 40th Anniversary by Lincoln Center for Lincoln Center Out of Doors.
Amon Tobin’s V838 Monocerotis was commissioned for the Kronos Quartet in honor of its 40th anniversary by Lincoln Center for Lincoln Center Out of Doors and by Stern Grove Festival.
